Orange, lime green and turquoise appear along with some fuchsia circles. Here's the inspiration photo and then the journal page. StencilGirl Products is, of course, my go-to stencil resource for both the stencils used in this page. After an unexpected trip to the ER, I created this page when I returned home using the peaceful combination of healing greens, plants and the Japanese influence symbols to express a soothing page.

Opposite journal page

betsyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13679740370888227955noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8176324276423078117.post-14906907594339580662020-05-12T16:40:00.002-04:002020-05-12T16:40:44.319-04:00Inspired by azaleasYou can't compete with the brilliant colors of azaleas. I was inspired by the New York Botanical Garden's virtual tour this Mother's Day. Here's the result of the inspiration on my journal page.
I love finishing a journal that has documented three years of my life! So full of yummy pages! My life is starting a new chapter, so time to finish this one and start a new journal. This journal was new for me --regular sketch paper that needed some gesso, or not, to get started. Pages that may or may not lay flat because there are no binding rings. And thickness building up on one side, making it challenging but also very unique. I hope you feel the same satisfaction of filling up your journal and then revisiting the pages and times you had creating them.
I started this spread with a painterly and stenciled background of snowflakes. Using a fun punch to punch out negative space on paper scraps made fun tiny white snowflakes shine through. Using a Posca pen, I added the tree shapes with a bit of white highlighting the snow. I started with an inspirational quote, but decided the peacefulness of the page didn't need any text. I hope you let some winter trees inspire your art journaling pages this season!
In my home, my clothes, in nature. As October arrives I think of orange, the color of harvest and the color of joy. Think of all the beautiful colors of the fall leaves celebrating the season! As I thought about orange, I immediately thought of the bright, joyful Chinese lanterns. I love their color and shape. I used this as inspiration for the cover of my fourth quarter traveler's notebook planner. After using gesso to prepare the kraft cover, I painted layers of acrylic paint until the yellows and oranges blended to my delight. I added white to accent areas of light and make my lanterns come to life!
I enjoy creating my own planners as the seasons and color choices change. This year I've designed quarterly inserts for my travelers notebook - changing the theme and colors based on the time of year. I always love an excuse to paint a sunflower, so I chose to feature this on the cover of my third quarter planner. A bit of gesso, acrylic paint, inks and a permanent pen was used to create the cover shown. I especially like to flatten the cover so I can paint the image on both the front and back covers.
Try it yourself - choose a flower, walk through the woods, or find a favorite vegetable in your garden. It doesn't have to be complicated, simply let it inspire you to create a page in your art journal!
Time to do what you love! I'm loving watercolors and the color CORAL right now. Watching the magic of watercolors dancing together is very meditative. The color CORAL brings energy and warmth to the page and your life. Pantone's Color of the Year is Living Coral so now is the time to try this warm color in your journal. TIPS: Allow watercolors to move around on a wet shape by dabbing paint from your brush. Try Daniel Smith's Quinacridone Coral for a beautiful coral color.
<span style="background-color: white; color: #1d2129; font-family: , , "blinkmacsystemfont" , ".sfnstext-regular" , sans-serif; font-size: 14px;">Happy April!
Using watercolor and some lettering prompts, I hope to complete the whole month! Here's a sampling. Enjoy the coming of Spring!
I always surround myself with color which is influenced by the season. Here's a few journal pages to celebrate February.
I use these colors in my home, journals, clothes and planner.
<span style="background-color: white; color: #1d2129; font-family: , , "blinkmacsystemfont" , ".sfnstext-regular" , sans-serif; font-size: 14px;">I challenge you to use these colors in your art journal. Use what you have! I used a favorite stencil, some gesso, torn book text, paint, ink and even some reinker ink. I found a quote to write on a scrap of paper and glued on top.
Tip: if you are adding paper to your page and it isn’t quite the right color, sponge some of the page color onto the scrap and it will perfectly blend! Take 30 minutes - just enough time to relax, have fun and feel satisfied with your completed pages!betsyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13679740370888227955noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8176324276423078117.post-7884485777059154642018-12-31T16:19:00.001-05:002018-12-31T16:21:53.800-05:00Happy New Year!

(The left hand pages are tough to work on!) As I thought about traditions that had special meaning to me I wondered about the origin of them, so I decided to research them as well. Here's a sampling of a few pages. Hoping you will document the holiday traditions that are special to you and your family. Happy Holidays!
It's not something that comes naturally to me, but when I practice I do get more comfortable doing it. I chose my B6 Slim Tomoe River paper insert, pulled out my carbon ink pen, Pentel brush pen, foundation pens and watercolors. Even though I love the crinkly paper, I found out quickly that the fountain pen ink bled too much so I switched to the carbon ink pen. I discovered that COLOR not only influences my art journals but also my everyday life.
I found the best way to sketch was to have the item right in front of me to really look at, instead of drawing from memory. I hope you give it a try. It doesn't have to be perfect, just a quick sketch of your "everyday" item can be uniquely expressed in your journal to remind you that everyday matters.
I've created my own version of Inktober using my Hobonichitecho, Pentel brush pen and watercolors. It's a quick way to art everyday and forces me to keep it loose in the style of etegami.
Green brings the balance and harmony and pink brings life and fun to the party! I was feeling a bit lethargic before journaling, but these pages certainly perked me up!
A green background was covered with areas of blue gelato and pink paint/paper peaking thru. The flower shapes were painted in white before the pink was added to really make them pop. You'll even see hints of rain on the page because it's still raining in the Northeast! Strips of paper and Posca paint pens in white and black help add finishing details.
I’m sharing a spread representing the healing treatment I'm currently receiving for my hands at Damany Center. I started with gesso on the page before spreading a thin layer of watercolor. The colors selected will help my recovery: BLUE to bring me patience; GREEN to represent growth and new beginnings; RED to bring new life into my hands. I created my own own stencil by cutting branches and leaves from a sheet of acetate and painted the green watercolor thru the stencil. Then I traced my hand and used a stabilo pencil with waterbrush to define the edges. My written feelings are hidden in the background by quickly scribbling around the images. <span style="font-family: "system font regular";"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Inspired by a walk near a koi pond, I’m celebrating the beginning of summer with YELLOW and ORANGE: happy, joyous colors! And the koi symbolizes good luck and prosperity. Next time I will videotape this crazy (no thinking) layering of stencils, gelatos, collage papers and inks. It's time to put on some uplifting music, grab your journal, and create some colorful pages! <span style="font-family: "times new roman";">

<span style="font-family: "system font regular";"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Using an old gift card is a great way to spread paint! It’s fun, fast and stress-free, in addition to using very little paint. Here I chose the Mexican flag colors, but added YELLOW -- because it loves to party! I added scraps of paper from the day including a napkin I obviously didn’t use but saved for my journal instead! I intend to add some personal writing to the page. What memory will you document today?<span style="font-family: "times new roman";">

Nothing 'beets' the magic of watercolor!

And let's celebrate the uniqueness of you! Start with Distress inks applied with a sponge using a honeycomb stencil. Then use a Pentel brush pen to draw the image. A small stipple brush can be used to color the image with Distress inks. Finally, add your text and scraps of washi tape and stamped rice papers. Use YELLOW, of course, the color of optimism, happiness and celebration!
Here's the latest one created with layers: 1) start with Distress oxide ink sponged onto page; 2) repeatedly stamp background images; 3) add color-coordinating washi tape; 4) stamp tree image onto dyed coffee filter paper; 5) Glue paper to page. 6) Add torn pieces of paper and accent areas with Inktense pencils. 7) Use tiny alphabet letters to stamp the quote.
For an easy way to make your own stamps, cut the image from foam instead of carving. Here are the materials I used.
